Joe McCormack is an Infectious Diseases Physician based at the Mater Hospitals, South Brisbane. He did his basic training in Ireland and his advanced training in the UK and USA. He has worked at the Mater since 1984 and has retained a position at the University of Queensland since that time; he is currently Honorary Associate Professor of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Ireland), a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, a Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine. He is an honorary life member and past President of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases. He was awarded an MD by thesis on the topic of the role of Cytokines in Infectious Diseases. He has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences, has authored over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, written many book chapters and co-authored a textbook Infectious Diseases: a clinical approach.
