Incontinence, or loss of voluntary urinary control, can occur at all ages and stages of life, affecting both men and women. There are many potential causes. This can occur sometimes in association with other medical conditions and often related to abnormalities of pelvic floor function. Evaluation of incontinence is performed by urologists. This encompasses detailed medical history, physical examination, urine testing, and some specific further testing. This may include a specialised study of the pressures within the bladder (urodynamics), urinary imaging, telescopic evaluation and at times, more complex assessment.
Treatment options vary from simple modifications of lifestyle and exercise, medications, use of some specific physical aids, and occasionally specialised surgery. Some of our urologists pecialise in the management of urinary incontinence.
Children’s incontinence is managed in a focused clinic setting involving our specialised paediatric urologist.
